The first marches\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/globalvoices.org\/2020\/03\/02\/in-pakistan-petition-to-ban-prominent-womens-march-stifles-feminist-voices\/\">occurred<\/a>\u00a0on Women&#8217;s Day in 2018 in three major cities, where women from all walks of life took to the streets. Since then, the movement has expanded to include numerous other cities in Pakistan. Each chapter has its own unique themes, digital art, banners, slogans, and street performances to highlight their demands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Aurat March has encountered opposition from the administration and religious groups in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/globalvoices.org\/2020\/03\/13\/islamabads-womens-day-march-met-with-violent-opposition-from-conservative-agitators\/\">previous years<\/a>. This year was no exception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-aurat-march-in-lahore\">Aurat March in Lahore<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In Lahore, for example, the rally organizers were&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1740214\">denied<\/a>&nbsp;a No Objection Certificate (NOC), which authorizes groups to hold rallies and large public events. The district administration cited concerns of potential clashes between the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dailytimes.com.pk\/571706\/religious-parties-announce-haya-march\/\">Haya march<\/a>&nbsp;(a modesty march organized by religious groups) and the Aurat March. Despite being reminded that the court had&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1538075\">granted the organizers the right to protest in 2020<\/a>, they were still denied the NOC this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">In a city where large crowds are allowed to gather for PSL, a peaceful gathering of women and gender minorities is being silenced and denied their constitutional right to assembly. Are cricket matches more important than issues of gender-based violence?<br><br>6\/n<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/MarchTuHogi?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#MarchTuHogi<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/PpL3VnrScP\">pic.twitter.com\/PpL3VnrScP<\/a><\/p>&mdash; \u2067Aurat March Lahore (@AuratMarch) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AuratMarch\/status\/1631682108593942528?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 3, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HRCP87\/status\/1632018149783781376\">Human Rights Commission of Pakistan<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/amnestysasia\/status\/1631706742672465922\">Amnesty International South Asia<\/a>&nbsp;have criticized the resistance shown by the administration. In response to public backlash, Mohsin Naqvi, the Interim Chief Minister of Punjab, had given assurances that the administration&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pakistantoday.com.pk\/2023\/03\/05\/minister-pledges-safety-for-aurat-march-after-noc-refusal-on-security-grounds\/\">will not prevent the protesters<\/a>&nbsp;from holding their march in the province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Lahore High Court instructed both parties to resolve the issue as soon as possible. The marchers&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenews.com.pk\/print\/1047727-lhc-disposes-of-petition-on-aurat-march\">agreed to change the venue<\/a>, but the court also instructed the organizers not to invite guests from a specific sect and to refrain from uploading controversial statements on social media. Meanwhile, the political party&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pakistan_Tehreek-e-Insaf\">Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf<\/a>, led by former Prime Minister Imran Khan, will also hold an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nation.com.pk\/07-Mar-2023\/imran-khan-to-lead-pti-election-rally-in-lahore\">election rally in Lahore<\/a>&nbsp;on the same date, but no concerns have been raised against them by the authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the eve of the planned rally on March 8, the organizers of Aurat March Lahore&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.republicworld.com\/world-news\/pakistan-news\/organisers-of-aurat-march-presents-60-demands-including-end-to-patriarchal-violence-in-pak-articleshow.html\">publicly announced<\/a>&nbsp;a list of 60 demands, which included an end to patriarchal violence and increased representation of women in policymaking roles. But we will not be deterred. However, the court rejected the petition and observed that the slogans were not objectionable and that the Constitution of Pakistan guarantees freedom of movement to all citizens. The court also imposed a fine of Pakistani Rupees (PKR) 25,000 (USD 90) on the petitioner and ordered that their national identity card (NIC) be blocked by the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) if the fine is not paid. The court further deemed the petition a publicity stunt. Meanwhile, the Karachi chapter of the Aurat March&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/images.dawn.com\/news\/1191568\/this-year-the-aurat-march-in-karachi-will-be-held-on-march-12\">will hold its protest on March 12<\/a>&nbsp;to accommodate working-class women, as March 8 falls on a weekday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Aurat march in Islamabad:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The police in Pakistan&#8217;s capital Islamabad&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tribune.com.pk\/story\/2404987\/islamabad-police-baton-charge-aurat-march-participants\">baton-charged<\/a>&nbsp;peaceful protesters at the \u201cAurat March\u201d on March 8, 2023. Earlier in the day, the Islamabad High Court rejected a petition filed by a politician challenging the permission to hold the Aurat March rally in the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Politician Khushal Khan tweeted:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">At the Aurat March in Islamabad in front of the Islamabad Press Club.
